Srinagar, Sept 16: Jammu and Kashmir sales tax department has registered a phenomenal hike of 195 per cent in the recovery of various taxes at Lakhanpur toll post, the gateway to the state, during the first 13 days of the current month. The department has, during this period, made a recovery of Rs 90.53 lakh against Rs 30.65 lakh in the corresponding period of the previous financial year registering an increase of Rs 60 lakh, a spokesman of the department said today.
He attributed the success achieved by the department to the initiatives taken by the state finance minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig.
Meanwhile, the department recovered a penalty of rs.30,47 under general Sales Tax Act, 1962 from one Atul Mahajan for importing taxable goods into the state clandestinely.
The officials of the department, on a tip off, intercepted a truck on Bambyal-Kathua road, bypassing the Lakhanpur toll post. The truck was carrying taxable goods like safety matches, Vanaspati ghee and edible oil which were being imported into the state unauthorizedly. The truck alongwith the goods was seized on the spot, the spokesman said.
