New Delhi, Jan 17: A high-level DMK delegation today held discussions with Congress president Sonia Gandhi on firming up the alliance between the two parties for the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu after which she said she would meet Karunanidhi soon. This is the first time that Sonia was meeting DMK leaders.

"It is going to be a forward movement,” Sonia told reporters after hour-long talks with the delegation led by DMK deputy general secretary M K Stalin when asked how she would view the outcome of today's meeting.

Sonia said today's talks were only in the preliminary nature and leaders of the two parties would meet again in two to three days.

Asked whether she would meet DMK president M Karunanidhi, Sonia said, "I look forward to meeting Karunanidhiji. At the earliest opportunity I shall call on him.”
Sonia said today's discussion was a follow up of senior party leader Manmohan Singh's discussion with DMK chief in Chennai last week. Singh was also present at today's meeting.

Sonia said that it was a "preliminary" talks on general political situation in the state. Both the parties have decided to discuss further with their party colleagues and again meet in the next two to three days.
Stalin, Karunanidhi's son, said the talks were focussed on further strengthening the alliance and the political situation in the state.

Asked whether the issue of seat sharing also figured at the talks, he replied in the negative.

Dayanidhi Maran, son of late Murasoli Maran and former Union Minister T R Baalu were also present at the hour-long talks at Sonia’s official residence here.
