Delaware, June 09: Annika Sorenstam beat Grace Park on the first hole of a play-off to win her first LPGA Championship and her fifth Major. The Swedish world number one took a four-stroke lead into the final round at a wet DuPont Country Club.
But she shot a one-over-par 72 while South Korean Park fired a four-under 67 to leave both players on six under. In the sudden death play-off, Park came up short of the 18th green and missed a 12-foot par putt. Sorenstam hit a six-iron to 20 feet and tapped in her par putt to claim victory.
"This is amazing," said Sorenstam after clinching her 45th LPGA career title and a £160,000 first prize. "This is the title I really wanted to win. I was focusing on the Majors this year and it feels so good to have pulled it off.
"It came down to the last hole and it was exciting but I made it when I needed to," she added. Rosie Jones (71), Rachel Teske (71) and Beth Daniel (72) tied for third but were six shots adrift of the leading pair. A victory in this summer's Women's British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes would make Sorenstam the fourth woman in the modern era to complete the career Grand Slam.
