Imphal, July 27: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today survived an attempt on his life but four security personnel were injured when heavily-armed militants ambushed his convoy at Wangjing, some 35 kms from here, official sources said. The militants struck around noon when the Chief Minister was returning to Imphal after inspecting construction of a dam at Sangaiyumpham in Thoubal district, the sources said.
The militants fired at the Chief Minister's convoy, a few second after it left Wangjing area, but Singh escaped unhurt.
The four securitymen, in another vehicle, were injured, the sources said adding they were admitted to a nearby hospital.
Singh was safely escorted to his official residence, they said.
After the attack, a heavy exchange of fire took place between Singh's security personnel and the militants.
The attackers, however, escaped, the sources said adding a massive combing operation had been launched to track them.
Minutes after the attack, normal communications between capital Imphal and Thoubal district were stopped to prevent militants from intercepting any wireless message, the sources said.
The identity of the militants is not immediately known but the area where the attack occurred is infested with activists of underground militant outfits like Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup, People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak and People's Liberation Army, the sources said. Bureau Report
