Bangalore, Feb 23: Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna today exuded confidence that the Congress would retain power in the state. Krishna was speaking to newspersons after the Raj Bhavan issued a one-line communique announcing the dissolution of the assembly, thereby clearing the decks for holding simultaneous elections to it along with the Lok Sabha.

Asked whether he was taking a gamble by advancing the assembly elections by eight months, he said ''all elections are a gamble.''

To a question, he said he was not aware of the distinction between a ''caretaker chief minister and a regular chief minister. I have to find out the difference from my Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu, who has been governing for four months without the benefit of an assembly.''

Krishna said that he had requested the Election Commission to hold the polls after the first week of April to ensure that the elections did not clash with school examinations.
Asked whether more leaders would join the congress from other parties, he said the ''doors are wide open as long as they accept the ideology of the party.''

On speculations that family members of former chief minister late Ramakrishna Hegde would be joining the Congress, he said no one had approached them as they were in a state of mourning. ''however, they are most welcome to join the party,'' he added.

A decision on renominating sitting members would have to be taken by the party high command, he said.
