Seoul, May 14: North Korea called on the government of newly reinstated South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun today to demonstrate its independence from Washington by expelling US troops. Two cabinet-level state organisations released a joint statement soon after South Korea's court rejected the impeachment of Roh and restored him to office, ending two months of political paralysis.

"If the South Korean people are to truly enjoy something new, they should build a truly independent new society without the US military presence and free from its domination," it said.
The statement from the central committee of the Democratic Front for the reunification of the fatherland and the committee for the peaceful reunification of the fatherland did not mention the court's ruling.

It said the outcome of South Korean elections on April 15 represented "a great victory of the new over the old." The March impeachment triggered a public backlash, helping the ruling Uri Party win an overall majority in the polls.
The comeback of Roh, who advocates engagement with the Stalinist state, is expected to fuel improved inter-Korean ties.

"We should make the year 2005, the 60th year since the US occupation of South Korea, the year the us troops will be forced to withdraw from South Korea so as to put a definite end to the us domination over it," the North's statement said.
