US break women`s relay world record
The US broke the women`s 4 x 100 metres freestyle swimming world record when they won the gold medal at the Olympics on Saturday.
Jenny Thompson claimed a record-equalling sixth Olympic gold medal and the United States broke China`s six-year-old world record to win the women`s 4x100 metres freestyle relay final in the Homebush Bay Pool on day.
Amy Van Dyken, Dara Torres, Courtney Shealy and Thompson
romped home in 3 minutes 36.61 seconds to beat the mark of
3:37.91 set by China at the World Championships in Rome on
September 7, 1994.
The Netherlands were second in 3:39.83 and Sweden third in
3:40.30.
Thompson`s six golds -- all in relays -- is matched in women`s Olympic swimming only by former East German Kristin Otto, who won six golds at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
