Washington, Apr 30: US President George W Bush and leaders of Japan and South Korea today agreed to keep pushing for an "irreversible and verifiable" end to North Korea`s nuclear arms programme, the White House said. In separate telephone conversations with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun, Bush also "reiterated his intention to resolve the issue peacefully," said spokesman Ari Fleischer.

Bush and Roh "exchanged views on last week`s talks in Beijing and agreed to continue pressing for the irreversible and verifiable elimination of North Korea`s nuclear weapons programme," he said. The US leader also told Roh, who was due to meet Bush here March 14, that he still planned "to include South Korea and Japan fully in the diplomatic efforts" to pressure Pyongyang to give up its weapons, said Fleischer.

According to Fleisher, Bush and Koizumi "agreed that they will continue their discussions and consultations as we work very closely with our good friends and allies in the region on this matter". In Paris, a Japanese foreign ministry official told reporters that Bush told Koizumi that Japan and South Korea should join multilateral talks aimed at resolving the escalating crisis "in the near future."

During the 10-minute conversation initiated by Bush, the US president said Washington was "satisfied with the responsible role played by China" during talks last week between US, North Korean and Chinese officials in Beijing. Bureau Report
