Riyadh, Oct 15: Security agents aboard a Saudi Arabian airlines plane flying from Khartoum to the Red Sea city of Jeddah foiled a hijacking attempt by an armed Saudi national today, the airline said.

The plane returned to the Sudanese capital 20 minutes after the hijack attempt by a Saudi man armed with a pistol, the airline said in a statement published by the Spa news agency. The hijacker was handed over to Sudanese authorities, who opened an investigation, it said.

The 185 passengers on board were safe and sound and were to resume their journey at a later date, it added. There were also 19 crew members on board the plane.
