Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peeth Jayendra Saraswati has said he was deeply disturbed by the incidents in Gujarat and appealed to the people to promote communal harmony in the country. ''I am deeply disturbed by the incidents in Gujarat and appeal to both the communities to live like Ram-Laxman and not like Bali-Sugreev,'' the Shankaracharya said after visiting a few riot affected areas.
''The two communities should love each other like Ram and Laxman, who were sons of different mothers, not like Bali and Sugreev, who hated each other despite being real brothers,'' the pontiff said while drawing an analogy from the epic 'Ramayan.'
He appealed to the people that one should not ''act like an animal'' but behave like a human being. The pontiff said he was ''deeply shocked'' by the incidents of Godhra train attack and violence in its aftermath. The Shankaracharya said he had talked to the state and the Central governments to try and restore peace immediately and help victims irrespective of the community they belonged to.
He appealed to the people to live in peace and harmony. ''All of us are children of one mother...Mother India...We should live like brothers and sisters.'' Before addressing the news conference, he visited some of the riot-affected areas at Ramol, Choryasini Chali and Lati Market and met the victims. He blessed them, distributed 'prasad' and appealed for peace.
The pontiff assured the people that there was a ''secular government'' in India and every religion would be saved by it. He said secularism for him was not that the government will have no religion but secularism means that the government would have ''all'' the religions. He said there was only one god and therefore people should live in harmony without differentiating between communities.
