London, Mar 06: A book written by Rani Manicka, the Malaysian-born author with Indian roots, has been short-listed along with seven others for the prestigious Commonwealth Writers Prize. Manicka`s book - the rice mother - is already the regional winner for the 2003 commonwealth writers prize in the best first book category from South East Asia and South Pacific Area.

Others chosen in the best first book category are waiting for an angel by Helon Habila (Nigeria), a place to hide and other stories by Kwame Dawes (Jamaica) and Haweswater by Sarah Hall (UK).
The four regional winners for the best book category are- the other side of silence by Andre Brink (South Africa), the polished hoe by Austin Clarke (Canada), spies by Michael Frayn (UK) and of a boy by Sonya Hartnett (Australia).
A distinguished pan-commonwealth panel of judges will meet in Calgary, Canada in May to select the final winners for the 2003 Commonwealth Writers Prize.

The judges for the 2003 commonwealth writers prize included India`s Dr Sanjukta Dasgupta. The prize will be announced on May 8, 2003.
Last year`s 10,000-pound best book prize was awarded to Australian author Richard Flanagan for Gould`s book of fish.
