Raipur, Dec 01: An estimated 15 to 20 per cent of the 13 million voters had exercised their franchise till noon in by and large peaceful polling in the first ever assembly polls in Chhattisgarh today, officials said. State governor Lt.Gen (Retd) Krishna Mohan Seth and his wife Veena Seth were among the first voters to exercise their franchise in Civil Lines polling booth in Raipur city constituency while Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, his wife Dr Renu cast their vote in Marwahi-ST assembly segment at 11:40 hours.

Reports received from tribal Bastar region, comprising three naxalite infested districts of Bastar, Dantewara and Kanker districts, said polling was affected in about 13 polling booths in Bijapur area as naxalites looted electronic voting machines (Evms), triggered landmines at several places and exchanged fire with the security forces.

Election officials said a decision regarding the polling in these 13 booths would be taken by the commission later this evening. Polling could take place tomorrow or day after in these 13 booths located in the remote villages of Dantewara district.
The workers of ruling congress and opposition BJP came to blows in Marwahi-ST constituency, from where Chief Minister Ajit Jogi and leader of the opposition in the assembly Nandkumar Sai are locked in a multi-corner contest.

The trouble broke out when congress workers raised slogans when Sai was talking to the television journalists in the town. Later, both the groups reached the police station to lodge their complaints.

Meanwhile a police spokesman, quoting reports received from 16 districts, said the polling was progressing peacefully as no major incidents were reported from anywhere in the state.

The ruling Congress and the BJP, the main contenders for power, have fielded their candidates in all the 90 constituencies while NCP has put up its nominees in 89 seats. BSP has fielded 54 candidates while nominees of CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha (CMM), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha are among the other parties in the fray.
