Jammu, Nov 07: Setting the agenda for police, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today asked police to prepare themselves for a new role of tackling militancy and adopt a humane approach in dealing with any situation. Police have to gradually take over the role presently assigned to army and para-military forces for tackling militancy, Sayeed told top police officers here while reviewing security situation in the state.
Therefore, they have to prepare themselves for a new role, he said.
"The image of police must be such that people find friends in them and this is the need of changing times in a civilised society," the chief minister said, adding police have not only to be humane but must also appear so. Besides normal policing, police have to effectively ensure law and order and fight militancy and other forces inimical to peace, he said.
This is a Herculean task that has to be undertaken keeping in mind that civilians are not harmed while dealing with any situation, Sayeed said.
"We want peace with dignity and police have to change for playing the role of a facilitator and a friend." Bureau Report
