Kolkata, June 28: Narcotics Control Bureau sleuths have seized 390 kgs of ganja, worth Rs 11 crore in international market, concealed under wooden logs and tin articles in a godown in Kolkata's Beliaghata area, NCB sources said today. It was the biggest-ever ganja seizure from Kolkata in recent time, NCB assistant director N C Patra said adding bureau sleuths had earlier recovered 1,557 kgs of ganja in Nabadwip in Nadia district in last may.

The seizure comes close on the recovery of huge quantities of psychotropic substance ephydrine hydrocloride, used for producing heroin substitute ATS, from tenanted apartment of former CBI top brass U N Biswas in Salt Lake on May 17 last. Five foreigners were arrested after the seizure. Patra told a news agency that the ganja seizure, made last night, followed confessional statement of one person arrested from near a city theatre with more than 20 kgs of the contraband.

The contraband, contained in sacks, were stacked and concealed under wooden logs and tin materials in a godown at Munsibazar in Beliaghata, Patra said. The consignment was believed to have arrived from Manipur, he added.

The arrested was produced in a city court today which remanded him to jail custody. NCB, Patra said, would produce the man in the city sessions court (sixth bench judge to deal cases under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act) on Monday. Bureau Report
