Chennai, Sept 10: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was today unanimously re-elected AIADMK general secretary. This would be her fifth term as general secretary.
A formal announcement in this regard was made by party's election officer and Finance Minister C Ponnaiyan here.
He said several nominations were filed on her behalf while no one had filed nominations against her. She was first elected to the post in 1988 soon after the death of AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran leading to a split in the party with one group headed by Janaki Ramachandran, wife of M G Ramachandran, and the other led by Jayalalitha.
After the defeat of AIADMK in 1989 assembly polls, both the factions were merged into one and Jayalalithaa was elected general secretary of the unified AIADMK. She was again elected general secretary in 1993 and 1998.
Ponnaiyan said Jayalalithaa, who was in Udhagamandalam, would be informed about her election today itself.
Elections to other posts, right from village level would be announced by Jayalalithaa soon, he said.
As per the party constitution, general secretary has to be elected by all the primary members of the party for a five year term. Bureau Report
