Pune, Sept 08: Even as ‘Ganeshotsav’ festivities reach their peak in Maharashtra and revellers get ready to bid farewell to the elephant-headed god, the place where it all started - Vichurkarwada in Pune - lies in utter neglect.
Creaky stairs, peeled plasters, damaged roof and unhygenic surroundings present an ugly sight to the people who visit this area, where Lokmanya Tilak first started the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav to mobilise the masses against the British regime and inculcate a spirit of patriotism.

This event later turned into one of the most important festivals of India which is celebrated with great pomp and show.

Another significant aspect of this place is that Swami Vivekananda had visited Vinchurkarwada, met Tilak and even meditated here.
Initially, Ganeshotsav was celebrated by leading Sardar families like Patwardhan and Majumdar, Khasgiwale As a private affair. In 1893, Sardar Khasgiwale for the first time celebrated the utsav as a public festival on a small scale.

Tilak saw great opportunity of uniting the public using this festival as a medium to bring about political consciousness among the masses. But the place where the seed of this revolution was born is now reduced to an old, dilapidated structure.
