Officials in this southern coastal town said attacks on fishermen by pirates in the area and in the Bay of Bengal had increased since the start of the fishing season last month.
Four fishermen were killed on Thursday by pirates who fled with their personal belongings and fish. "The bodies were thrown into the water," said Bellal Hossain, a fishermen who survived the attack near here.
Security sources told news agencies that three groups of pirates were operating in the area.
The number of defence personnel involved in the new drive was not revealed.
