Ahmedabad, June 21: Describing fourth estate as the main pillar of democracy, deputy prime minister L K Advani today said credibility of newspapers was of utmost importance. Speaking at the launching ceremony of ‘Divya Bhaskar’ daily here, which made its entry into Gujarat for the first time, Advani said, "Though the fourth estate is considered one of the four pillars of the democracy, I consider it to be the main pillar."

He said, "Once a scribe asked me which was my favourite word. After thinking, I told him it was credibility.”

Akin to public sector, credibility is equally applicable to the mediapersons as well, he said adding that "when one reads some news, he should feel that the newspaper has given a true report".

Stating that he would have been a journalist had he not joined politics, Advani also reminisced the turbulent times that the print media faced during emergency in 1975.
"Three classes viz politicians, those in legal profession and journalists were adversely affected during that period. And I stressed that it should be the newspaper persons, who should be given the freedom before anyone else, as it would lead to freedom of democracy,” he added.

"The condition of newspapers during emergency can be compared with the utter discomfiture that one feels if breathing is stopped, even momentarily or that of keeping one devoid of water for 24 hours,” he said.
