The Congress-NCP-led Democratic Front (DF) government in Maharashtra is likely to initiate action against Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray for his reported statement that Muslims in the country be disenfranchised.
Prima-facie the statement of the Sena chief is objectionable, official sources said, adding the legal department of the state government had given a green signal to go ahead with the action against Thackeray. Following the legal department`s green signal, we have now asked the police to take suitable action, they said. Thackeray, in an interview to the party mouth-piece `Saamna` last month, had stated that the so-called secular parties would not bother about Muslims if the latter`s right to vote was taken away from them.
When his statement invited ire from all quarters and the governemnt termed it prima facie unconstitutional, Thackeray said his statement had been taken out of context and distorted by vested interests.
