The rescued sex workers who have begun a new journey of life as garment workers would have least freedom in case of changing profession in the future, in Dhaka. These girls would be allowed to take a new job only after showing a no objection certificate (NOC) from the Department of Social Welfare.
The employers of rescued girls told a Bangladesh newspaper that they would hide the original' identity of these girls to their other colleagues and in the locality so that they do not face any problem and their dignity is protected. Some of the newly appointed garment workers, who were in Kashimpur Vagrant Centre after being evicted from their respective brothels, told the paper that they did not enjoy any freedom during their days in Nimtali and Tanbazar brothels, nor had they any freedom in the rehabilitation centre. As a result they are still feeling uncertainty, they added.
A group of 60 former sex workers have joined a garment industry in Dhaka recently. The employers, however, want to remain unidentified. Their formal joining was celebrated in a function at the Kashimpur Vagrant Centre in Gazipur district on Wednesday last. The function was hosted jointly by the Ministry of Social Welfare and the garments factory concerned. An NGO - Concern Bangladesh facilitated the rehabilitation of the former sex workers by organising training courses for them in the vagrant centre.

The sex workers were brought to the centre following their eviction from Nimtali and Taanbazar brothels in Narayanganj about seven months ago.

Another group of 25 former sex workers was employed by the same garment factory a couple of months ago. The new garment workers will stay in a hostel on the factory premises and draw a monthly wage of Tk 650. Initially, a total of 267 sex workers were sent to the Kashimpur Vagrant Centre. Of them, only 28 are now remaining in the centre. Others have been rehabilitated. Another group of 40 former sex workers were taken to the Pubail Vagrant Centre. All of them have been rehabilitated, said the newspaper.
In Wednesday's function, each worker was given a certificate as they completed a training course on garment industry successfully. They were also given appointment letters by the employers. The government provided the former sex workers a grant of Tk. 7,000 each as transitional cost. Bureau Report
