A moderate earthquake measuring 5.8 on the richter scale shook an island in eastern Indonesia but there were no reports of casualties or damage, a government official said on Monday.
The quake jolted Sumba island, some 1,500 km (940 miles) east of Jakarta on Monday evening, and the epicentre was in the ocean. The official said that the quake did not cause any tidal waves.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is regularly struck by earthquakes. In June, some 120 people were killed after a strong earthquake jolted Sumatra island.
