Security has been beefed up at the Srinagar airport in Jammu and Kashmir following movements of some militants near the main entrance of the heavily-guarded complex on Sunday, highly placed Indian official sources said. The sources told PTI that Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel stationed at the airport noticed five persons, dressed in police uniform, taking a sudden sharp turn near the airport in a stolen taxi and heading towards Srinagar. The taxi was earlier hijacked by militants from its owner on gun point.
The youths, who later turned out to be militants, had first asked the taxi owner to take the vehicle towards the airport and later forced him to deboard from the vehicle near the Srinagar-Airport road, the sources said. The owner later informed the police about the incident, they added. The incident at the airport comes close on the heels of a claim made by Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba (LET) militant outfit to a local news agency that five of its activists carried out a ''suicidal attack'' on the airport. The caller, who introduced himself as spokesman of the outfit in Kashmir, had said five ''fidayeen'' (militants) of the outfit stormed the airport around 1.30 pm (0800 GMT) Sunday. The sources denied the claim saying that except the 'unique incident' witnessed at the main entrance of the airport situated nearly one km from the main airport building, nothing unusual was noticed.
As a precautionary measure, security forces at the airport have been put on high alert, the sources said.
