Three people, including two police officers, were killed and seven security personnel were injured when a bomb hidden in a van went off in eastern Kalmunai, 270 km from Colombo on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at about 4 p m when a civilian informed the police that a van with a bomb has been parked on the Kalmunai-Ampmara road. Following a tip off two policemen along with the civilian went to the van and arrested four suspects.
Later some more policemen arrived at the site to examine the van. In the meantime, the bomb went off killing the two police officers and the informer on the spot and injuring seven other security personnel.

Last Thursday, police had seized two bombs of 20 kg explosives from a three wheeler in the same area and ten people were arrested. Police believe these explosives were to be transported to Colombo. Bureau Report
