A designated TADA court has extended until February 15 the interim bail of Yusuf Memon, Bombay serial blast accused and brother of absconding co-accused Tiger Memon, on medical grounds. Yusuf is suffering from schizophrenia since 1991 and has been undergoing treatment since then. After the serial blasts he had left with his family for Pakistan via Dubai. On his return he was arrested with relatives at Delhi airport.

The court released him on interim bail in 1999 after jailor informed that Yusuf could not be treated in prison and had to be taken periodically to government hospital. The judge P D Kode extended the bail from time to time. Yusuf was hospitalised when he was in custody and given shock treatment. His condition has now deteriorated and he has become weak, and in present circumstances shock treatment is not possible, his doctors have informed the court.

CBI prosecutor A B Belgal has opposed further extension of Yusuf's bail on the ground that the trial has come to an end and the court is nearly ready to record the statements of accused. At this juncture, bail should be refused, he pleaded. The CBI agreed to give its consent for bail extension until January 31 but the accused pressed for some more time following which the court decided to grant liberty till February 15 next.

The prosecution has alleged that Yusuf owns a flat in Tiger Memon's Al-Husseini building where cars and scooters were loaded with RDX which exploded at 13 places in the city killing more than 700 persons and injuring several others. Bureau Report
