Gwalior
A city with a colourful history that goes back over a millennia, Gwalior claims its origin from a legend according to which a warrior called Suraj Sen was cured of an incurable disease by a hermit, Gwalipa, who lived on the hilltop where the present Gwalior fort stands. The warrior in gratitude founded the city of Gwalior.

Gwalior has now become a city of immense importance and a wonderful place to witness the magnificent Moghul Architecture. The fact that it was ruled by many mighty rulers and has been the birthplace of many dynasties has ensured that it has a varied architectural heritage with each dynasty leaving its own indelible mark over the city. The Gwalior Fort: Standing on a steep mass of sandstone, the Gwalior Fort, which dominates the city, is a magnificent monument. The scene of many momentous events like imprisonments, battles and jauhars (mass Sati), this one has a reputation for being one of the most invincible forts of India. It has aptly been described as `the pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind`.

Gujari Mahal: This is a monument built within the Gwalior fort to the love of Raja Mansingh Tomar for the intrepid Mrignayani a tribal Gujar Queen. Within the Fort are some marvels of medieval architecture. Gujari Mahal has survived in an almost total state of preservation with its interior being converted into an Archaeological Museum housing rare antiquities, some of them dating as far back as the 1st century AD.

Man Mandir Palace: Built by Raja Mansingh, the vast chambers of this palace with fine stone screens were once beautiful music halls, and behind these screens, the royal ladies learnt music from the great masters of the day. Teli Ka Mandir and Sas Bahu Ka Mandir - The Teli Ka Mandir, is a 9th century Pratihara Vishnu temple and is a unique blending of architectural styles. Also dedicated to Vishnu is the graceful 11th century temple the Sas-Bahu Ka Mandir.

Jai Vilas Palace and Museum: The Jai Vilas Palace is the current residence of the Scindia family. About 35 rooms of this palace have been converted into the Jiwaji Rao Scindia Museum, and in this museum, the splendour of the regal lifestyle of the past comes alive. The Scindia Museum offers a glimpse into the rich culture and lifestyle of princely India in a way no other museum can.

Tansen`s Tomb: One of the `nine jewels` of Akbar`s court and a father figure for the Hindustani classical musicians in India, Tansen lies buried in Gwalior. The memorial to this great musician is not just a monument; it is part of Gwalior`s living cultural heritage. There is a `Tansen Music Festival` held here every year in November and December when renowned artistes from all over India gather at Gwalior to pay tribute to Mian Tansen.

Ghaus Mohammed`s Tomb: This is a sandstone mausoleum built for the Afghan prince Ghaus Mohammed, is a living example of early Mughal architecture.
