The chartered bus drove off the road at 4:00 am local time in Mae Prik district, Lamphang, about 410 km north of Bangkok, and skidded on its side down the embankment, said Mae Prik police station sergeant Sukhit Kattiwong.
“At least 20 passengers and the bus driver died in the crash and 16 others people were injured,” said Sukhit in a telephone interview.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
All the passengers were Thai nationals who had chartered the bus to take them from Mae Hong Son province, Thailand's northernmost province, to the southern resort island of Phuket.
