Several people were reported to have died when an earthquake struck Azerbaijan and surrounding areas on Saturday, prompting thousands of panic-stricken residents to flee their homes.
Azeri state television said two people were killed in Baku, a city with a population of about 1.5 million, including a child struck by falling masonry.
A duty officer at the city's ambulance service told that eight people had died during the quake, with most apparently suffering heart attacks.
It was not immediately clear if the eight included the the two victims reported by state television.
There was no word on any casualties further afield.

''There were two strong tremors, one after the other the dishes all shook and we ran out onto the street,'' one resident of a third floor flat in central Baku said, adding that gas supplies to the city had been cut as a precaution. Bureau Report
