Philippine Opposition leaders on Wednesday filed impeachment charges against President Joseph Estrada for allegedly taking bribes from illegal gambling syndicates, officials said. “We are interested in the truth,” Heherson Alvarez, secretary-general of the Opposition Lakas Party, told reporters as he filed the complaint for impeachment against Estrada at the office of the secretary-general of the House of Representatives.

The Opposition, however, does not have enough members in the House of Representatives to push the impeachment bid through to the senate for trial.
Alvarez said that only 41 members of the 218-seat Lower House had signed the impeachment complaint, making it unlikely to succeed unless there were defections from ruling party legislators.
Estrada's Lamp Party dominates congress with more than 160 -members in the House of Representatives. Eighteen of the 24 Senate members are also linked to his party.
