Sampras battles through as stars made to sweat
Pete Sampras was given a tough workout by Czech bogeyman Bohdan Ulihrach on a day that saw the big stars finally forced to work up a sweat at the Australian Open.
Ulihrach had beaten Sampras twice before and looked set to push him to a fifth set here when he went a break up in the fourth. But the American, bidding for his 14th Grand Slam title, showed why he won the previous 13 by stepping up a gear to come back for a 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 7-5 win.
“It was a roller coaster up there,” Sampras said. “I thought I had him when I won the first two sets but lost it a little bit.”
It was the second tough battle that the American has had to endure here and he admitted to feeling the strain going into his third round clash with Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina.
“I've played six hours in the last couple of days so my body needs a day off tomorrow. It's tough as you get a little bit older to keep winning slams.”
