The Indonesian Navy has finalized a deal to purchase four MI-17 helicopters from Russia, which will bolster and increase the mobility of marines in the performance of their emergency operations in certain areas, Navy Chief Admiral Achmad Sutjipto has said.
Russia is most prepared (to sell the helicopters) and the navy has finalised a contract to purchase four Russian MI-17 helicopters, the naval chief told reporters in Surabaya.
The arms deal with Russia assumes significance after the restrictions imposed by the west on Indonesia's war equipment purchases in view of alleged human rights violations in East Timor.
When asked whether the deal with Russia would create problems in Indonesia-US relations, the navy chief said, “We are a sovereign country. We are free to buy from anywhere we wish.”
On buying submarines, he said that Indonesia with its vast sea territory, needs submarines. But so many economic factors have to be taken into account before buying a submarine.
