The Cantt seat saw fierce competition between Congress's Sohail Akhtar Ansari and BJP’s Raghunandan Singh Bhadhuriya. The seat has mostly been dominated by BJP and Congress.


Kanpur Cantt Vidhan Sabha Chunav 2022 - A look at the top candidates


The BJP has fielded its one-time MLA Raghunandan Singh while the Indian National Congress (INC) has nominated the incumbent Sohail Akhtar Ansari for the seat.


From Samajwadi Party, Mohammad Hasan has contested the elections for the Kanpur Cantt seat while BSP has fielded Mohammad Shafi.


The seat has largely been dominated by either Congress or BJP. The saffron party won the seat seven times since 1967 while Congress has claimed four victories so far till now.

The BJP has fielded Raghunandan Singh Bhaduriya from the Kanpur Cantt seat. Singh last won the elections in 2012 and remained the MLA until 2017.


In the 2017 Assembly polls, Singh lost his seat to Congress leader Sohail Akhtar Ansari.


The seat was long held by BJP’s Satish Mahana, who in 2017 became a cabinet minister in the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government.

Sohail Akhtar Ansari candidate is representing Congress in the Kanpur Cantt Vidhan Sabha seat. He is the current MLA from the constituency.


Before Ansari, Congress on the seat in 1974, 1980 and 1985.

From the Samajwadi Party camp, which has never won a seat in the assembly elections, Mohammad Hasan has been fielded against the BJP and Congress.


As per the EC nomination filing, Hasan, 56, is an advocate by profession and has no past criminal records.

Mayawati’s Bahujan Samajwadi Party has fielded Mohd Shafi for the 2022 assembly elections. According to his nomination filing, he has studied till the 8th standard.

Other candidates contesting in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from Kanpur Cantt are: Ashish Shukla (BHSP), Jamsed (JAP), Ramesh (ABSP), Mukesh Pal (RSP), Mohd Meraj (RUC), Moinuddin (AIMIM), Rashid Jamal (AAP), Devi Prasad (IND)

The counting of votes is still underway, however, as per trends, Samajwadi Party's Mohammad Hasan is leading from Kanpur Cantt with 88,646 votes.
