    The three assailants, identified by the police as Lovlesh Tewari, Sunny Singh and Arun Maurya, have criminal records. The three had posed as journalists and joined a group of media persons after which they shot dead Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf from point-blank range while they were speaking to reporters in Prayagraj on Saturday night. Their families have said they have nothing to do with them. The police, that swung into action immediately after subduing the three shooters on the spot, are probing their background and criminal antecedents. Police officials said Lovlesh Tewari was jailed earlier as well. His father told the media that the family has nothing to do with him. Lovlesh visited home at times, and was in Banda five-six days back as well, the father said, adding that he was a wastrel and a drug addict.

    "He is my son. We saw the incident on TV. We are not aware of the actions of Lovlesh nor do we have anything to do with this. He never lived here, and neither was he involved in our family affairs. He did not tell us anything. He came here five to six days ago. We have not been on talking terms with him for years. There is already a case registered against him. He was jailed in that case," said the father Yagya Tiwari. Sunny, who belongs to Kasganj, has 14 cases registered against him, and has been on the run since being declared a history-sheeter.

    The three assailants, who shot dead gangster-turned politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, used highly sophisticated Zigana pistols which are banned in India. Zigana is a semi-automatic pistol produced by Turkish firearm manufacturing company TISAS. The production of the said pistols started in 2001 and is one of the first pistols in Turkey with an original design. Zigana pistols have a locked-slide short recoil operating mechanism with a modified browning-type locking system. These are illegal and banned in India. The price of these pistols is around Rs 6 to 7 lakh.

    According to an FIR lodged in the murder of Atiq and his brother Ashraf, it is said that the two were coming out of a hospital after undergoing a medical check-up on Saturday night when they were surrounded by media.

    Meanwhile, the twin murder at Uttar Pradesh was also referred to by the West Bengal municipal affairs & urban development minister and the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Firhad Hakim while addressing at a public rally at Suri in Birbhum district on Sunday afternoon.

Ahmed (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men, posing as journalists, in the middle of a media interaction.

    One of the journalists, Pankaj Shrivastava, who was present on the spot, has now shared a first-hand account of the events that took place out of Prayagraj hospital. The journalist, who works with news agency Press Trust of India, said that many journalists who were at the crime scene suffered minor injuries. "I was at the spot. We were asking questions to Atiq Ahmed when the incident took place. Suddenly, 3-4 men came from behind and started firing. At least 15-30 rounds were fired. One of my colleagues pushed me in order to save my life," PTI journalist Pankaj Srivastava said on camera.
