Maharashtra reports 15,765 new COVID-19 cases, total jumps to 8,08,306; death count at 24,903

Former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) Hospital where he was admitted earlier this month and had undergone surgery for the removal of a clot in his brain. He was 84. He was admitted to the Army Hospital in Delhi on August 10 and had also tested positive for COVID-19.

  • Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday (September 1) reviewed the progress of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation India Limited (DFCCIL), directing the DFFCIL management team and the contractors to take all possible steps to speed up the pace of works on all the sections of the Western DFC (1504 route km) and Eastern DFC (1856 route km). In the review meeting, which was attended by all the top officials of Railways Board, DFCCIL including CRB and MD/DFCCIL, and the contractual agencies, the progress of each individual section was discussed in detail, and instructions were given to ensure smooth progress by resolving all hindrances, according to an official statement.

Pranab Mukherjee's last rites were held today and his body was laid in state at his official residence 10 Rajaji Marg in New Delhi.


In other news, the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main began from today after being postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the exam amid COVID-19 guidelines. Around 8.58 lakh students have registered for the JEE main exams this year.
