    Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (July 7) inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of various projects worth over Rs 1,800 crores at an event in Varanasi. On the occasion, Prime Minister Modi thanked the people of Uttar Pradesh and Kashi for the massive support that they gave in the recent assembly elections.

    "For us, development doesn't just mean glitter. For us, development means empowerment of the poor, downtrodden, deprived, backward, tribal, mothers and sisters," he said.

    Modi added that the government is working continuously on providing pucca houses and piped water to every household.

    The Prime Minister asked the people of Kashi to keep Ganga and Varanasi clean and expressed the confidence that with the support of the people and blessings of Baba Vishwanath, all pledges for the city will be fulfilled.

    "My Kashi is a great example of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas," he added.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed a summit here on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and said the British gave the country an education system to create a "servant class" for meeting their own needs and a lot of it still remained unchanged. He also said the system should not just produce degree-holders but provide human resources needed to take the country forward.

    He said the purpose of the education system created in the country was only to provide jobs.

  • Spanning several sessions spread over three days from July 7 to 9, discussions will be held on themes such as Multidisciplinary and Holistic Education, Skill Development and Employability, Indian Knowledge Systems, Internationalization of Education, Digital Empowerment and Online Education, Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Quality, Ranking and Accreditation, Equitable and Inclusive Education, Capacity Building of Teachers for Quality Education.

  • "This process of consultation has been going on at the regional and national levels. Prime Minister addressed a seminar of Chief Secretaries in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh last month where states shared their insights on the issue. The Varanasi Shiksha Samagam is next in the series of consultations in this regard," the ministry said.

  • As the higher education ecosystem in the country spans centre, states and private entities, extensive consultations are required to take the policy implementation further.

  • The Ministry, along with UGC and AICTE, has brought in several policy initiatives like Academic Bank of Credit, Multiple Entry-Exit, Multi disciplinarity and Flexibility in higher education, regulations aimed at boosting online and open distance learning, revising the National Curriculum Framework to make it more in sync with global standards, promoting multi linguality and Indian Knowledge Systems and making both a part of educational curriculum, mainstreaming skill education and promoting lifelong learning, to name a few.

  • "The Summit will provide a platform for leading Indian Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to discuss, deliberate and share insights on strategies, success stories and best practices in implementing the National Education Policy, 2020," the Education Ministry has said in a statement.

  • UP Governor Anandiben Patel, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will also be present on the occasion.

  • According to the Ministry of Education, the three-day seminars will bring together over 300 Vice-Chancellors and Directors from public and private universities, educationists, policymakers, as also industry representatives to deliberate on how the implementation of National Education Policy 2020 can be taken further across the country after successful implementation of several initiatives in the last two years.
