UP Election 2022: 1st phase voting concludes in 11 districts, over 60% voter turnout recorded

  • Amid reports of technical snag in EVMs at some places, polling is going on peacefully in Uttar Pradesh, an Election Commission official said.

    "There were reports of a technical error in EVMs at some places. Those EVMs are being replaced," Additional Chief Election Officer (ACEO) B D Ram Tiwari said.

    On Samajwadi Party's allegation that poor voters were not allowed to exercise their franchise in Dundukheda village in the Kairana assembly constituency, Tiwari said the District Magistrate concerned has been asked to look into the matter.

The voting started at 7 am and is being held according to the Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Election Commission (EC). It is taking place at 25,849 polling stations and concluded at 6 pm.


According to the EC, an average of over 48% of people have exercised their franchise in the eleven districts with the highest voter turnout in Shamli and Muzaffarnagar.


The other districts where voters are being cast are Meerut, Hapur, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahar, Aligarh, Agra, Gautam Buddha Nagar, and Mathura.



As many as 623 candidates, including 73 women candidates, are in the fray and around 2.27 crore people are eligible to vote in the first phase.


Uttar Pradesh, home to around 20 crore people, is scheduled to vote in seven phases ending on March 7 and the counting of votes will begin on March 10.
