The encounter happened in Kangan village of Pulwama district in South Kashmir on Friday afternoon. The gunbattle has ended, and security forces are sweeping the area to ensure there are no other terrorists.

Early reports had indicated that two or three terrorists may be holed up together. An official said police are in the process of identifying the terrorist killed in the operation, and believe he could be a local.

The encounter began after terrorists opened fire on security personnel who were conducting a cordon-and-search operation in the area. The combing measure had been carried out by a joint team of the Army's 55 RR, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police, on the basis of inputs that some terrorists were holed up in the region.
