NEW DELHI: On the day when the Assembly election dates in Karnataka were announced, Congress got just what it wanted to attack the Bharatiya Janata Party - a faux pas by party president Amit Shah. The BJP chief was caught on camera saying that 'Yeddyurappa ran the most corrupt government ever'. The faux pas, caught on camera during a press conference, was tweeted by Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul tweeted: "Now that the BJP IT cell has announced Karnataka elections, time for a sneak preview of our top secret campaign video! Gifted to us by the BJP President, our campaign in Karnataka is off to a fabulous start. He says Yeddyurappa ran the most corrupt Govt ever... True."

Yeddyurappa served as the chief minister of the Karnataka during the first BJP-ruled government in the state in 2008. However, he had to step down from his post in August 2011 after corruption allegations were levelled against him.

The Election Commission on Tuesday announced the dates for the Karnataka Assembly elections. The polls will be held in a single phase with voting on May 12 and counting on May 15. As the dates were announced, both the Congress and the BJP were embroiled in a controversy.

Minutes before the Election Commission announced the dates of the elections, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted the poll and result dates. At the same time, Karnataka Congress social head media in-charge Srivatsa also tweeted the same dates. The tweets, now deleted, predicted that the polls will be held on May 12 and counting will be held on May 18.
