South Africa finish Day 1 of fourth Test at a better position against India.

Latest Updates

  • Over 84 | Score 231/7/ (Ashwin 6* Rahane 89*)

Play has been called for the day due to low visibility. Piedt bowls the last over and Ashwin sees it out. South Africa can take the new ball and they will like to start with it tomorrow. Good day for South Africa with seven wickets in their bag. Rahane has played really well and was dropped too by Amla. He will want to make it turn into something bigger on Friday.

  • Over 81 | Score 228/ (Ashwin 6* Rahane 86*)

Rahane has added 30 runs with Ashwin for the 8th wicket as India is heading towards 250-run mark. Rahane is mere 14 runs short of another Test hundred. Elgar and Piedt are bowling in tandem for the Proteas. Eight more overs are left in the day.

  • Over 74 | Score 209/7 (Ashwin 2* Rahane 71*)

Jadeja Out! Trying to play the Abbott towards mid-wicket, southpaw gave a catch to close fielder. Visitors now need mere three more wickets to bundle India out. But hosts still have a set batsmanin the form of Ajinkya Rahane. On top of it, R Ashwin, new to the crease, can also bat. In the meanwhile, India have crossed the 200-run mark.

    RA Jadeja c Elgar b Abbott 24 (59b)

  • Over 72 | Score 198/6 (Jadeja 24* Rahane 62*)

Jadeja and Rahane have already added 59 runs for the 7th wicket. After losing wickets at quick successions, both the batsmen showed signs of maturity. 17 overs are still left in the day as Proteas would look to bundle India out.

  • Over 65 | Score 173/6 (Jadeja 10* Rahane 51*)

Seeing that Kotla tack is assisting spinners, Amla has now introduced JP Duminy into the attack. In the meanwhile, Rahane completed his half-century in style by hitting a boundary off Piedt towards square leg. Jadeja too is playing his natural game. Dane Piedt, who has been the most successful bowler for the visitors thus far in the match, has occupied the other end.

  • Over 61 | Score 154/6 (Jadeja 6* Rahane 40*)

Now the onus is on the shoulders of Ajinkya Rahane to play a big knock here. He faced the similar situation many times in the past. He can still have a chance to forge a good partnership with Jadeja and then Ashwin. Piedt and Morkel are bowling in tandem for Proteas. Jadeja, who is new to the crease, should spend some time in the crease first before looking for big shots.

  • Over 53 | Score 139/6 (Rahane 31*)

Saha Out! Abbott once again being rewarded for his tight line and length as he picked up his 2nd wicket in the form of Saha. Hosts are in trouble now. This session simply belonged to the visitors. Leaving Kohli aside, all Indian batsmen played poor shots and lost their wickets. Proteas are right on top of the game at the moment.

    WP Saha b Abbott 1 (14m 15b)

  • Over 51 | Score 139/5 (Saha 1*, Rahane 31*)

Big blow for India as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma departed in quick succession. Both the wickets were taken by the offie Piedt, who has now have four wickets to his account. Half of the side is back in pavilion. Now Rahane is batting along side wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.

    RG Sharma c Imran Tahir b Piedt 1 (14m 6b)

    V Kohli c Vilas b Piedt 44 (73m 62b)

  • Over 41 | Score 114/3 (Kohli 29*, Rahane 23*)

Dean Elgar, who crated havoc in the Indian batting line up in the first Test, is now bowling along side Dane Piedt. But the spinners are not at all troubling Rahane and Kohli, who are playing sensible cricket.

  • Over 41 | Score 114/3 (Kohli 29*, Rahane 23*)

Kohli and Rahane have quickly reached to 29 and 23 respectively. It means, visitors have lost the opportunity to put India under pressure even after picking up two wickets in quick succession after lunch in the form of Pujara and Dhawan. Piedt and Morkel are bowling in tandem for the Proteas.

  • Over 36 | Score 93/3 (Kohli 21*, Rahane 10*)

Kohli is playing with the positive intent and has collected three fours in last two overs. Morkel is bowling on a leg stump line and Kohli is not leaving any opportunity to collect a boundary. He has swiftly reached to 22 off 25 balls, laced with four boundaries. Rahane is also taking singles at regular intervals from the other end to change the strike.

  • Over 33 | Score 79/3 (Kohli 9*, Rahane 8*)

Immediately after the lunch, hosts lost two wickets in the form of Dhawan and Puajara and are reduced to 60/3 from 60/1. Ajinkya Rahane, who hasn't done anything noteworthy in the series, has joined Kohli in the middle. Kohli is playing positive cricket and hitting boundaries whenever getting the loose balls.

  • Over 31 | Score 69/3 (Kohli 5*, Rahane 2*)

Pujara Out! Double blow for the hosts as they lost Pujara immediately after the fall of Dhawan's wicket. This time Abbott was the bowler, who bowled thunderous delivery to send Pujara's stumps for a walk.

    CA Pujara b Abbott 14 (37b)

  • Over 29 | Score 63/2 (Kohli 1*, Pujara 14*)

Dhawan out! India lost another opener as Piedt picked up his second wicket by trapping the southpaw in front of the wicket. Skipper Virat Kohli has joined Pujara after the fall of India's 2nd wicket.

    S Dhawan lbw b Piedt 33 (130m 85b)

  • Over 28 | Score 62/1 (Pujara 14*, Dhawan 33*)

Offie Pied and pacer Abbott have started the bowling proceedings for the visitors as the match resumed after Lunch Break. Pied has bowled well thus far in the match. Now it would be interesting to see what strategy Pujara and Dhawan will make against the spinner.

  • Lunch Break

    Over 26 | Score 60/1 (Pujara 14*, Dhawan 31*)

First session of the match belonged to both the teams. If India managed to score sixty runs in the first session, then, visitors got the wicket of in-form batsman Murali Vijay, who looked out of sorts since the start of the innings. Off spinner Dane Piedt gave Proteas their first breakthrough.

  • Over 21 | Score 43/1 (Pujara 2*, Dhawan 26*)

Morkel is looking more dangerous in his second spell. He is now testing the new man to the crease, Pujara, with some short pitch stuff. On the other end, Dhawan is playing with the straight bat and is looking sensible in the middle.

  • Over 17 | Score 32/1 (Pujara 1*, Dhawan 17*)

Murali Vijay Out! Vijay played a causal looking shot off offie Dane Piedt. But he got the the outside edge of his bat to give a simple catch to Hashim Amla at first slip. He looked a bit cagey since the start of play and finally his innings came to an end. Pujara is the new man in.

    M Vijay c Amla b Piedt 12 (84m 59b)

  • Justice Mudgal invited school kids' to watch the match and they have come in good numbers.

  • Over 14 | Score 26/0 (Vijay 10*, Dhawan 15*)

Dhawan played an exclusive shot towards cover region off Abbott to collect his 2nd boundary of the innings. It will certainly give him the confidence he was looking for.

  • Over 13 | Score 21/0 (Vijay 10*, Dhawan 10*)

First bowling change! Off spinner Dane Piedt has been given the ball as the first change bowler. Off the 2nd ball came the first boundary of the match from Dhawan's willow.

  • Over 10 | Score 14/0 (Vijay 10*, Dhawan 4*)

Cautious start by Indian openers. They are not playing any rash shots and taking their own sweet time to settle down first. We are yet to see the fist bowling change. Both the bowlers are bowling a bit on the shorter side. Pitching the ball up might help them disturb the batsmen.

  • More than the match right now, Virender Sehwag is on screen, giving an interview to broadcasters of the match. And it's quite interesting to listen to him. Viru stated that: "If there is one most memorable moment for me, it's my Test hundred on debut". Sehwag also feels that luck is important to make triple tons.

  • Over 5 | Score 5/0 (Vijay 5*, Dhawan 0*)

Abbott and Morkel are bowling at a tight line and length. After the end of five overs, Vijay has scored five runs, while Dhawan is yet to open his account. Cautious start by Indian openers.

  • Over 1 | Score 0/0 (Vijay 0*, Dhawan 0*)

Morkel and Abbott are bowling on a tight line. Vijay has scored five runs, while Dhawan has yet to open his account after the end of the five overs. New ball is not doing much at the moment.

  • Over 1 | Score 0/0 (Vijay 0*, Dhawan 0*)

First over by Morkel was right on the money. He tested Vijay on the off-stump line.

  • Now it would be interesting to see how the Kotla wicket plays. If the pitch provides turn from day one then the controversy emerged after the 3rd Test at Nagpur will be continued.

  • South Africa (Playing XI): Bavuma, Elgar, Amla(c), AB de Villiers, du Plessis, Duminy, Dane Vilas(w), Piedt, Abbott, Tahir, Morkel.

India (Playing XI): Dhawan, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli(c), Rahane, Rohit, Saha(w), Jadeja, Ashwin, Ishant, Umesh Yadav.

  • Temba Bavuma, Kyle Abbott and Dane Piedt have replaced Stiaan van Zyl, Kagiso Rabada and Simon Harmer.

  • Three changes in South African squad as well.

  • One change in the Indian team as Umesh Yadav has replaced Amit Mishra.

  • Toss: India have won the toss and elected to bat first.

India end the first day of the fourth Test on 231/7. Dene Piedt created havoc in the Indian batting line up as he ran through their top-order by scalping four wickets. Ajinkya Rahane top scored for the hosts with an unbeaten 89.
