Thane: A 62-year-old man, who formerly worked with the mortuary section of the Thane District Civil Hospital and said to have conducted over 40,000 autopsies during his service, was honoured with 'Thane Bhushan' award here.

The award, instituted by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), was presented to Banarasi Choutala at the hands of Thane district guardian minister Eknath Shinde at Ram Ganesh Gadkari Rangayatan last night.


The awardee was personally chosen by Mayor Meenakshi Shinde.


According to the civic body, Choutala had performed autopsies on over 40,000 bodies during his 40 years of service.


'Thane Gaurav' and 'Thane Gunijan' awards were also presented on the occasion.
