Tirupati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday wished for peace, unity and harmony in the country, in a statement that comes against the backdrop of various incidents that have led to communal tensions.

"May there be peace, unity and harmony in the country," Modi said here on the occasion of Dussehra, a festival which symbolises victory over evil.


"May we succeed in eliminating poverty. May Lord Balaji bless the country with happiness and prosperity in the common man's life," he added.


The Prime Minister's message for peace, unity and harmony comes against the backdrop of certain incidents like Dadri lynching that have led to communal tensions in the country.


Modi also tweeted, "Greetings and best wishes on the auspicious occasion of Vijaya Dashmi."


The prime minister was in Andhra Pradesh where he laid the foundation stone for the new capital Amaravati.
