Indefinite curfew in Agomoni police station limits of Dhubri

Trouble began at 7 pm yesterday after an incident involving a person of a particular community near a temple at Kalowal Bazar area, officials of Agomoni police station said.
The situation was brought under control after locals handed over the person to police last night, the officials said.
However, a mob gheraoed Agomoni police station this morning, blocked National Highway 31 for several hours and damaged some shops there demanding the release of the person picked up last night, they said.
Police and CRPF resorted to lathicharge and firing in the air to disperse the mob, the officials said.
Curfew was imposed from 1 pm today until further orders as the situation deteriorated at Kalowal Bazar area under the police station limits, District Deputy Commissioner Nazrul Islam said.
Prohibitory order under Section 144 Cr P C was also imposed in the entire district from today until further orders, Additional District Magistrate Dr Debajit Khanikar said.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in Guwahati that "there is some tension in Dhubri district but it is fully under control. No untoward situation has emerged in any part of the state."
Gogoi said fundamentalist forces were trying to create communal tension in the state during Eid.
"We got intelligence input that some forces were trying to create communal tension in Eid festival yesterday. But our police and other security forces prevented that successfully," Gogoi said.
Meanwhile, Dhubri district unit of Bajrang Dal has demanded an inquiry into last night's incident and identification of the forces responsible for it.
