The accident took place near Vaijani village as two autorickshaws collided with each other after a speeding truck rammed into the two vehicles. Two occupants of the three-wheelers died on the spot, while five others sustained injuries, Jagdishpur police station in-charge Jagdish Kumarr Singh said.

The victims were identified as Bajrangi Das (40) and Mohammed Hafiz (45), he said, adding that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem and the injured persons admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital at Bhagalpur for treatment  where the condition of two of them was stated to be critical.

The incident sparked off a protest by the local people who blocked Bhagalpur-Dumka road for several hours demanding action against errant drivers of all three vehicles and compensation to the aggrieved families, Singh said.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters, he said.
