The Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) on Sunday reaffirmed its stance that it would oppose any negotiations with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before it surrenders its arms.
''Not only the LTTE should denounce its demand for a separate state of Eelam publicly and stop arms struggle, it should also prepare a time table to lay down their arms before commencement of any formal negotiations,'' publicity secretary of the JVP, Tilvin Silva, said at a press briefing held on Sunday morning in Colombo. JVP sustained its command as the third force in Lankan politics by winning 16 seats, including three bonus seats. The JVP has got 8,15,343 votes which is 9.13 per cent of the polling.
Mr Silva also said the JVP doubts whether the United National Front (UNF) would be able to complete its full term in power. Expressing his happiness to win six more seats in this election, Mr. Silva said the return of their party leader Somanwansa Amarasinghe has helped a lot in winning more seats.
Mr. Amarasinghe, who returned to country after a 12-year-long self-exile to help the party in the election campaigns fled the country on the polling day since he was fully aware that he would be in trouble if the UNF returned to power.
Mr. Silva on Sunday confirmed this and said Mr Amarasinghe left the country since there was a danger for him in the country. The JVP has been accused of killing more than 7,000 Sinhalas, including service personnel, academics, media personnel and politicians, in the south between 1987-89 and was cut down to size during the then Premadasa government of the UNP during which Mr Ranil Wickremesinghe was also a cabinet minister.
