Shimla: The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has sanctioned Rs 14.87 crore for a cancer cure unit at Indira Gandhi medical college in Shimla, increasing the scope for better treatment facilities to the patients in the state.

The sanction was the first instalment of Rs 45 crore- project under Tertiary Care centre Scheme of National Programme for prevention and control of cancer, diabetic, cardiovascular diseases and stroke (NPCDCS) 2015-16, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said in a statement today.


Nadda said that the programme would go a long way in treatment of cancer patients and strengthening the basic infrastructure.


He said that a proposal is in the pipeline to open such a centre in Mandi district providing facilities for treatment of cancer.


He also added that the Health Ministry had already sanctioned Rs 17 crore for providing 'Trauma care facilities' in government hospitals in the state.


Nadda said that that his ministry has taken several measures to strengthen the health care services in the state, and sanctioned an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and two more medical colleges in Hamirpur and Nahan.
