All England champion Gopi Chand after laid low by injuries and the new scoring system, has opened his campaign in the 6-Star Denmark Open badminton championships on a winning note. Fully-fit Gopi Chand first brushed aside England's Andrew Smith 7-2, 7-4, 7-1 and then beat Holland's Dicky Palyama 7-5, 8-6, 7-0 to enter the quarterfinal. However, another Indian Siddharth Jain fell in the first hurdle itself, beaten by Swedish Danel Eriksson 3-7,4-7, 0-7.
As expected, Yao Jie, the Dutch Open runner-up, and Aparna Popat both made it through the qualification stage of the women's singles.
