The Pentagon denied reports on Sunday that a US soldier was killed when some 400 to 600 foreign militants staged a violent uprising in an Afghan prison after surrendering.
"Central Command personnel said that all its personnel were accounted for," Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Ken McClellan said, referring to the US command that controls all US troops in Afghanistan.
A news channel citing unconfirmed reports, first said that a US soldier had been killed at the prison near Mazar-i-Sharif, but later said that it could have been a civilian US national.
US aircraft provided support for Northern Alliance forces fighting to quell the uprising.
An interpreter who was near the prison when the uprising occured said that the mainly Arab, Pakistani and Chechen prisoners disarmed their guards after killing a senior Alliance commander with a hand grenade. Bureau Report
