Government on Saturday announced merger of Ministry of Information Technology and Ministry of Communications into Ministry of Communication and IT with three departments of Telecom, IT and Posts. Minister of Communication, IT and Parliamentary Affairs Pramod Mahajan would be heading the new ministry. “A notification has been issued in this regard under clause three of Article 77 of the constitution regarding amendment to allocation of business rules, 1961,” an official spokesperson said in New Delhi.
The move comes close on the heels of introduction of Communications Convergence Bill, 2001 and taking over the communications portfolio by Mahajan recently. The new bill seeks to bring a comprehensive legislation for it, Telecom and Broadcasting and also proposes to establish a super regulator-- Communications Commission of India. Bureau Report
