New Delhi: In a bid to boost its winnability in Assam polls, BJP's Parliamentary Board on Thursday declared Sarbananda Sonowal as its chief minister candidate for upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

Here are key things to know about Sarbananda Sonowal:-


- Sarbananda Sonowal is currently the Union Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs 


- He is known as a firebrand and dynamic youth politician


- He is Member of Parliament (MP) from Assam's Lakhimpur constituency


 


- Until January 2011, he was a member of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) but later joined BJP


- He was born in Molokgaon of Assam's Dibrugarh


- Sonowal went to Dibrugarh University and Gauhati University; he holds various professional qualifications as well -  Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and B.C.J


- In 2012,  he was appointed as State President for Assam Bharatiya Janata Party


- In 2001, he was elected as MLA from Assam's Moran constituency


 


- In 2004, he was elected as MP from Assam's Dibrugarh constituency
