Sources in the Defence Ministry told IANS that Modi was briefed about the overall situation in Nagrota and Samba in Jammu and Kashmir.

Seven soldiers, including two officers, were killed when suicide bombers armed with guns and grenades stormed a military base, near the headquarters of the Indian Army's 16th Corps in Nagrota.

In another incident, three militants were killed in a shootout with security forces near the International Border with Pakistan in Samba.

The attacks at the military unit and a BSF camp - both on the outskirts of Jammu city -- were the latest in a series of escalating militant violence in Jammu and Kashmir after the September 29 surgical strikes at terror launch pads by the Indian Army in Pakistani Kashmir.

The combing operation against the militants was halted after it became dark and would resume on Wednesday morning.
