According to a News18 report, Sonia Gandhi will continue to be the party president for another year which means that the anointment of Rahul has been further delayed.

However, there has been no official confirmation on the same.

Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi chaired the crucial Congress Working Committee meeting at the national capital in the absence of his mother and party president Sonia Gandhi.

The meeting, which was attended by top brass, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was expected to take a call on the organisational elections, the deadline for which ends on December 31.

According to the agenda circulated to CWC members, the current political situation and organisational matters were to be discussed in today's meet, apart from focussing on the strategy for the winter session of Parliament that begins on November 16.

Party sources had told media that organisational elections are to be deferred for more than a year as there is very little time to hold the polls and the party has to focus on the upcoming assembly elections due early next year.

Many in the party are, however, divided on the timing of Rahul's elevation and want it to be deferred till the upcoming assembly polls. Some party leaders, however, also feel that in view of the current situation Sonia Gandhi should continue to steer the party and not take a back seat.

There have been repeated suggestions that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi should take over reins of the party from his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi and a call on it was to be taken at the CWC meet held today.
